Probe Start Metal Halide Light Bulb

Traditional metal halide (MH) lamps use probe-start technology. To start the lamp, a discharge is created across a small gap between the starting probe electrode and the operating electrode. Once the lamp is started, a bi-metal switch removes the starting probe electrode from the circuit. Metal halide bulbs operate under high pressure and temperature, and require special fixtures to operate safely.
