Benefits of LED Lighting

One may wonder whether or not it is worth the extra cost to buy products that use LED lighting. However, most people are not aware that LED lighting is present in many common items from lanterns to camera flashes to more elaborate items such as stage lights and displays used at railway stations. The benefits of LED lighting are quite extensive.

LED lighting has been around for decades, however, the first visible-spectrum (red) LED was developed by Nick Holonywak, Jr. in 1962. In fact, it was the first of its kind. He was working for General Electric at the time. Since then, the use of LED lighting is growing every day due to its low energy consumption, small size, long life, and low maintenance. Other benefits of LED lighting are its visibility in broad daylight and fast switching times. Fast switching times mean a reduction in the time needed to light up. This is useful especially in car break lights, where an LED light will light up to half a second faster than an incandescent bulb. What does this mean? It improves the safety of vehicles as it gives drivers behind a car more time to react to break lights.

It is important to know that LED lighting does not create IR or heat radiation, which makes them ideal for uses such as medical lighting, where IR radiation can be harmful to a person. The lower heat of LED means that there is less stress on air conditioners and other aspects of your car’s components, which also aids in making LED lighting more energy efficient.

Initially, LED lighting may be more expensive, but this is where it can become cost effective. The long life span of LED lighting is another of the benefits of LED lighting. While it may be more expensive to buy LED lights at first, they last much longer, making them cost effective in the long run. In fact, a 6 watt LED light is equivalent to a 40 watt incandescent bulb and continues to outlast the incandescent bulb without a reduction in efficiency. The 40 watt incandescent bulb may last 1000 hours while the LED light will last 50,000 hours. How’s that for a great life span?

These are just a few of the benefits of LED lighting. It’s easy to see why LED lighting is a cost effective way to go.
