Are All CFL Bulbs Dimmable?

People search often for CFL bulbs that are dimmable. Usually, when they go to the local hardware stores, they find ones that are non-dimmable, and that’s not ideal.

Being able to dim lights means that you can adjust how much light you need depending on the time of day and what you’re doing during the day. You can also save on energy because the lower the bulbs are dimmed, the less energy is used, which means you save money. Without the ability to dim CFLs, you could end up using more light than you need and want, which just wastes those resources.

Some people will try to use non-dimmable CFL bulbs on a dimmer. Packages for non-dimmable CFL bulbs state exactly that they cannot be used with dimmers. Only dimmable CFLs that meet the UL standards of 1993 can be used on dimmers.

Using Different Dimmable Bulbs on One Dimmer

Some people want to place a LED, CFL, and incandescent bulbs on the same dimmer. Sometimes, this is okay to do. As long as the design of the dimmer allows for different types of bulbs, it should work. The information on this should be on the dimmer packaging. Never try to place bulbs in the dimmer if they aren’t meant for them. This could lead to malfunctioning of the dimmer and a fire hazard.

Concerns About Dimming CFL Bulbs

The biggest concern dimming CFL bulb users have is that they don’t dim as low as others. The dimmable ability depends on the size and cost of the bulb. Higher quality bulbs will be able to dim much more than cheaper ones.

It’s important to understand that it’s not only about the bulb when it comes to dimming. It’s the actual lamp/dimmer combination in conjunction with the bulb. This means that if you’re not getting the bulb to dim as much as you would like, it may not be the bulb that is causing the issue. It could be the lamp/dimmer that is making it impossible for the bulb to dim as much as you would like it to.
